The Schatzalp sanatorium opened in 1900, with wealthy patients fighting for the coveted spots in the luxurious Art Nouveau building. Thomas Mann was also one of the visitors. The spa at that time served the later Nobel Prize winner as inspiration for the book “The Magic Mountain”. The then sanatorium is now operated as a hotel.

Guided Tour historic Alpinum
A so-called Alpineum was first mentioned in the Davoser Blätter as early as 1907. Over 120 years later, not only has the site undergone many changes, but expectations, horticultural practices and the collection have also transformed significantly.
Let our garden manager take you on a journey through time, exploring the diversity of mountain flora and the workings of a botanical garden, and give your green fingers a boost.

Guided tour Guggerbach Alpinum
The Guggerbachtal Alpinum was first opened in 1972 as the so-called “New Alpinum”, after an avalanche in 1968 had created the necessary space for the site.
Since then, it has been continuously redesigned, maintained, expanded and developed.
Following another avalanche in the winter of 2017/18, it was decided once again to further expand this part of the garden.
Let our garden manager explain the “actual” botanical garden of the Schatzalp to you. Find out why the beds are arranged geographically or by habitat, and why it was such a stroke of luck that the two avalanches chose precisely this spot for a botanical garden.
